"Check the oil at a similar interval, like one hour after shutting down. Checking oil at a gas station then shutting overnight then checking the oil will drive you nuts. Once you have consumption established and throw some cardboard under the truck…"

Seem to be using some oil lately...

Lately I've noticed that now and then I have to add some oil to my once new engine. It now has about 40K miles. I traveled from Montreal to Carberry Manitoba with about 1000 lbs of payload. Got a new job out here so I had to lug the toolbox, tools, ect, ect. It was approximately 1500 miles, at usually 60-65, sometimes, 70-75 mph. I kept an eye on the oil, was holding good, then suddenly, I was down a liter/quart. I should mention, there's no CAT in my exhaust system, so there's only a new…See More

Profile Information

What is your profession? (not required, just if you want to share your knowledge)
Tradesman, Electrical, Hydraulic, Mechanical, Computers, ect
About Me:
I'm a brought up plumber, schooled machinist, aircraft electrician, controls electrical, self taught auto mechanic, restoration freak, old car freak, welder, fabricator, metal carving or forming, love physics kinda person. My passion is applying all I know to a problem, give me a tough one, and I will find a solution. Love a challenge, now if i could just get more power out of my Z24...would love any updates on how to do that..!
How many 720's or other Nissan trucks do you own? What years and types?
I've owned 5 720 pickups, still driving my 84 4WD King Cab Deluxe... Z24 and an 82 720 4WD King Cab Deluxe...Z22, California Model...had an 80, 83, 85 as well, will miss them too.
What modifications have you done to your truck(s)
The 82 has lost the Altitude compensator, and a few other gadgets. It has an oversize exhaust system, very free flow. 3" body lift, and 31" tires. My 84 is mostly stock on the outside, but under the hood, the EGR is off line, had a new radiator, with an Electric cooling fan, thermostat controlled, and adjustable. A pre-heater on the coolant, and a 190 degree thermostat, need it in Quebec winters. I run stock 215 tires "winter tires" in the winter, requires up here, they are very soft compound, and in the summer run 225s , just one size up from stock. The removal of the engine driven cooling fan was a big plus, then engine really winds out, much more so, and it has a bit more power. The electric fan setup gives you much more room to work on the front of the engine if needed. I also have removed all items related to Air Conditioning, that were under the hood, even the big heavy mount plate that was bolted to the block.
What modifications do you still plan to do to your truck(s)
I have a special Electric Heater coming in soon, it is a High Power 2050 BTU 12 Volt Heater, with a 50 amp rating and 2250 BTU output. To add some techno, I may add another smaller 12 V battery in parallel, to buffer the draw on the system. The added heat will be nice when getting going in the morning, or anytime I need to go, it gets down to -40 around here, without the wind.
How many miles would you travel to attend an all 720 truck meet?
as far as needed

Nissan Oil Filters, made for the Z24,

Posted on January 25, 2012 at 8:51am 12 Comments

This is a good read from someone else on this subject of engine rattle and Nissan Oil Filters:

================================================== ============

On my 84 Z24, I recently retarted my timing to 2 degrees, to compensate for low octane fuel. I had pinging because in my "I think I know better" way of thinking, I had my base timing set to 5 degrees. Granted the spec for my truck is 3 degrees, +- 2. At 2 degrees, the engine idles great, runs strong, does not ping, except…
