I only own one right now. But my dad had a 1972 datson pickup truck before I purchased my Nissan 720d in 1985
What modifications have you done to your truck(s)
Nothing other than trying to keep it running. LOL
What modifications do you still plan to do to your truck(s)
I may need to rebuilt the carburator someday in the future.
How many miles would you travel to attend an all 720 truck meet?

My 1985 720 pickup with a z24 engine will seldom start when it is warm with the ignition switch.  It will spin over very well but will not start.  I can push it and it starts immediately.  It seems as if the starter is taking too much fire for some other components to allow the engine to run.
I repeat, it spins over very well but it is as if there is no fuel or spark while the starter is engaged. 
By the way, there is no smell of gas that indicates it is flooded.

Well I can't believe a Nissan dealer could identify the carb, it seems the newer newer technicians don't know much about older technology, if it doesn't have a computer to tell them what's wrong, they don't know what to fix lol.

 

But it is a Hitachi carb, and there are some common problems with the 85-86 models being they are electronic feedback carbs.  It sounds to me like you might have a wiring problem on the carb, I've had the exact same symptoms before and it was a broken wire on the carb wiring harness, right next to the plug.  Sometimes the wire break internally, and it looks fine from the outside, but the wires stretch and break inside the insulation.  There is a Hitachi Carb 101 section here, and the carb featured in it is the same carb you should have on your truck.  I'll try to find the exact spot and place a link here for you.  There is an anti-dieseling solenoid in the carb, and if it isn't energized it will cut off fuel as if you were shutting down the engine.  So, if the wire is broken or the connector is corroded or not making contact you'll have a hard time starting and keeping the engine running.  You also need to make sure the carb is grounded, since it's an electronic carb, it needs ground to complete some of the circuits in the carb.

 

Do you know if you have the original fuel pump still installed?  If so, there is also a filter screen in the bottom of the pump that can get clogged up.  It's under the cap on the bottom of the pump, it kind of a bayonet style attachment, but there should be a raised hex head on it so you can get on it with a wrench or socket.  Just be sure to soak it with some penetrating oil for a while if it hasn' t been of in a long time.

 

So do you have fuel showing in the sight window on the carb when it's having problems starting?
