Mike, I'm a newbie to this site, just joined 'cause I'm starting a 620 long bed body swap onto my 82 720 KC 4x4 chassis. I saw several threads on this (mostly with lots of comments from you) and was hoping you might direct me to the best threads where I could pick up the most information. just got my mustnag II ifs tubular control arms upper and lower bags , crossmember, steering rack, 12" disk breaks in the other day soo after carlise it's time to get this thing laid out.. also got a dana rear end donated so thats getting shortened and put in there
Ya know your absolutely right and I never thought about it like that. I was looking at it like one was a retarded spark just to reduce emisions before they exhusted. Thanks again for the input - saved me a lot of time going nowhere with that one!!!
That's what I also figured Mike. I wish I could use this thing in my 81 but it's just too different to try and retrofit it in there. Say have you ever heard of anyone trying to eliminate the emission spark side of the Z motors? I'm right in the right spot on my motor to do it if I could find someone who could tell me if it works or not. Otherwise I'd just as soon put it back stock. Thanks for all your info!!
Yea Mike, My question about the rad. is that I aquired an almost new rad. from a guy who had some 79's and 80's 720's with the L20b motors and this rad wont fit my 81 - it's too small and the water outlet is on the wrong side. I was just wanting to try and identify it to know what all year trucks it would fit?
hey mikey mike... need to pick your brain again!!! lol, anyway... my truck just started running weird!!!... when im in bout 3rd or 4th gear and im at low idle... i noticed when i press the gas more at low idle.. black smoke comes out of the exhaust!!!... also, for some reason, cant get an idle in cold mornings no more. and when im warmed up... my rpm needle is jumping around... wtf???? n e way, its a z24 lower and a z22 head. im thinking that my piston rings are shot and my compression is crapping out. i dont have time for a compression test right now so, what are your inputs and how can i approach this for the time being?... oh yeah, wen i floor it everytime i get in the high rpms on a low gear, i shoot out black smoke. do you think it may be my fuel pump perhaps?. soory to cry to you lol.
Ya....you can set the date back and forth......without sacrificing and or loosing the program.
My puter is (was) set at the correct time/date...and....if I want to view the program.....I set it back to last year. Did it many times
Although....I do have a new puter......so I don't think I have to change the date.
good news is... i got it started and its turning over now!!!... bad thing, idling is very irratic. i marked my timing screw so i can put it back the way it is but my idling is going haywire from 500 to 1000 rpm.
so now i installed it and... its not starting, sounds like timing is off..... i read everything here and im still having minor troubles (not starting), my spindle is in 1128 position, im also tdc before i started. am i missing something? i was thinking of the rotor pointing too no.1 s/plug, do you have a pic of the rotor pointing to the plug? i know im doing something wrong... but what? i am backffiring thru the carb and its not strting.
any and all help would be seriously appreciated....
theres two bolts thats holding the top and bottom portion together to get access to the inside... can i open that up and clean it?,, also, is there a gasket between the 2 maiting surfaces? they have like brown sludge inside that im trying to clean out prior to installing. i dont have to mess with timing or the distributor right?, also, i dont have too drain oil either right? thanks a whole lot!!!, got the part for free.95 lol fitted perfectly in my coveralls!!! lol
i found a high presdsure pump from the junkyard!!! it was from an 86 d21 with a ka in it!!!... although, my question to you is...what can i clean it with cuz its gunked with oil and stuff in the inside, and whats the easiest way to install it? i remember ur post about these and yes the rotor inside it the pump is bigger than the stock one. thanks mike!!!
Thank you for the comment. I just fired it up yesterday for the first time. Started then stopped. Now I am not getting any gas from the pump. I think from sitting for a while some of the mechanicals are going to be a bit rusty. Anyway i am going to get another pump and I should be good to go till the next repair. I will stay in touch. i appreciate your knowledge and helping me on this project. I have never done this major of a repair and what i have learned is invaluable. Once again, thank you! Eric
Thanks for the drawings. They are close to what I am working from. Some of the diagrams have more hoses than others. Like the carb for example. Mine has only two ports where the drawing is showing three. I will keep on going and ask questions as I go. Do you happen to have a place to reccomend where I can buy a thermo vacuum valve? The top port broke off of the one I have and it is a hard part to locate. Once again thank you for your help!
Seriously though, I'll make up the harness and we can trade out on something somewhere. I just think it would be pointless to use the old flap style AFM. Ressurected my old flap style AFM setup for my other truck and re-discovered why I cussed so much about it before. LOL.
I've got a couple slush box computers laying around. I'm acually going to swap to a manual trans computer and re-chip the ecu. Think when I burn the new chip I'll program the speed limiter to 300km/h. Good luck getting there in a 720. LOL.
